The Real Big Brother
Living in Canada I hear a lot of what goes on in America our next door neighbour. One of our prime ministers, Pierre Trudeau once said about America “Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.” This is true in any situation. Even with one of the latest patriot acts that have been passed the United States has decided that it must protect it’s Arctic interests. Last time I checked they had Alaska and that was it. Most of the Arctic is ours and/or Greenlands. The USA is around 5% of the worlds population but consumes 75% of the global energy resources. Wow, and they just thought there was an obesity problem. But this is nothing compared to the Real Big Brother, China.
Right off the bat lets get to the nitty gritty. China has more than 1.1 billion people living in it, that is 1/5th of the worlds population. Imagine living next to that elephant? They have been around for 4,000 years as a continuos civilization. Just think of that, it is 2011 now, double that number and thats what we are talking about. History so old that the knowledge they have accumulated must be huge. You ever notice most chinese people don’t talk a lot? At least not the ones I know. What are they hiding? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to paint a bad picture here, one of my best friends and mentor is Chinese, but if you don’t like Chinese food you better start liking it cause as Mussolini said “The fate of nations is intimately bound up with their powers of reproduction.” China has the man power and the tax base to make anything happen at this point.
No matter what you think about their human rights violations, I don’t know anything other than what I’ve seen in the media so I can’t talk to that, but just look at what they did with the Olympics, it was amazing. From the Birds Nest to the Water Cube, even the opening ceremonies it was a site to behold. It gave us the a taste of what this country could be capable of in the public eye. And this is in the modern era, they were the civilization way back that brought us paper, printing, gunpowder and the Great Wall of China. If I was China I would put up my feet and get the rest of you to do the work, I did my bit, but I am sure they are hard at work on something else. They are sending rockets into space, exploring other heavenly bodies and are probably have plans to populate the moon, but that is just speculation. From cheap labour to a wealth of natural resources, China will have plenty of money to invent the newest game changer.
I have a program on my iPad called World Factbook you can also access the website here. It provides information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 267 world entities. China is at the top or close to most of the lists I look at, population, labour force, investment, etc and the ones that matter anyway. They are a world super power whether you like it or not.
I would love to go to China one of these days and see the Terracotta Warriors, the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and just soak up some of this ancient civilization. All of this history and a beautiful countryside before they mobilize on the rest of the world. So America, keep your head up, lose some weight and get ready for big brother, cause eventually they are going to run out of room and their moon plans aren’t quite ready yet.
